One person stands between what is, and what can be…

He was a universe onto himself. One small shining solar sun in the dim turbulent red skies. The only light in the dark. Around him, the gems circled, slow and timely, humming with a power so strong and in tune with him that it made him essentially invincible.

For a time.

Eyes the colour of garnets, or blood depending on one’s outlook, met with the emerald hatred that watched him through the wavering superheated air. The Beast, he had privately dubbed it, Iblis. Wrought from hell itself it seemed, it had arisen from within the earth. And it brought with it, Armageddon, full of fire and smoke and sulphur and brimstone. Armageddon in the truest sense of the word.

Around him, the city burned. People were dying in the raging destruction that was ‘the flames of disaster’. The world it seemed was perishing. His world.

His world.

Now it was a stalemate. He was neither tired, nor injured, but it seemed the beast met him equally at every turn, power for his speed, and speed for his power. The four massive arms were at rest, one lazily draped across a blazing skyscraper that was crumbling slowly before his very eyes.

Hell on earth.

And it was watching him. Calm and hating across the distance, it was watching his every move.

And when, one by one, the emeralds orbiting him slowly dimmed and dropped into the fiery molten seas below, it seemed that the beast almost smiled.

Sonic watch the dulled gems vanish from view, his eyes able to pick out the instant each one disappeared into the magma sea in a burst of flame, even at the long distance that separated them.

The flame would not destroy them. Not those gems. When the rock cooled, they could be pulled out again. Used again. But for now, their power was exhausted.

And Sonic was suddenly living on borrowed time.

He drew a short breath and lifted his eyes to meet the hatred, the scorn and the fury of the monster that was seeking to take from him everything he held dear.

Then he smiled.

The flame would not destroy him either. Nor this beast. For Sonic had the tenacity of pure steel, and a spirit that was forged in fire itself.

Time to send Iblis right back to Hell…

I HAD to add that little quote in the very beginning, because it’s what made me do this pic.

Little tribute to Sonic, because despite my love for Blaze and Amy and maybe Shadow and ohgod Knuckles!... I adore Sonic with a sort of weird blind devotion. Have done for years now.

There is NO substitute. X3

And I hope, I hopehopehope that in the new game, Sonic will finally get his stand-alone fight. He hasn’t had a real one since SA. And it’s time he was put back in the limelight. =O!

The beastie is someone I’ve gotten from screenshots and the new game trailers. I figure he has to be one of the end bosses, if not THE one. Plus, he’s pretty nifty too. o.o
